NBC has ordered a first season of episodes for the new musical-drama pilot “Smash,” which follows a cross-section of characters who come together to put on a Marilyn Monroe musical on Broadway. The show’s casting directors are now casting guest stars, day players, dancers, extras, stand-ins, and photo doubles in New York.
Tony Award winner Michael Mayer will direct the series, which is being written by Theresa Rebeck. Rebeck is executive producing “Smash” along with Dreamworks TV’s Steven Spielberg, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. Grammy and Tony Award winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who will write original songs for the show, will also co-executive produce.
New NBC chief Bob Greenblatt, who first developed “Smash” at Showtime, has been passionate about the show. The pilot episode , which was filmed in March, 2011, has been excitedly screened for NBC executives over the past several weeks. Unlike “Glee,” which is a music-packed series, “Smash” will instead focus on the effort that goes into making the music, choreography, and direction of a Broadway show come together.
“Smash” is being filmed in New York, and season 1 will begin shooting in June, 2011. The series will begin airing this fall on NBC.

The plot will follow follow an out-of-town tryout of a Broadway musical, and centers around a songwriting team who write a musical about Marilyn Monroe based on an offhanded remark from an assistant. They post a showstopping number on YouTube. When it’s a viral hit, a producer (Anjelica Huston) who’s looking to recapture success long past decides to produce the musical. There are two choices to play Marilyn – Karen (Katharine McPhee), a talented young newcomer, and Ivy (Megan Hilty), a theater veteran.
