FOX 21 Television is in pre-production on a new series pilot for Lifetime titled “Cinnamon Girl”. Auditions are being held in Los Angeles and New York for starring, co-starring, guest starring, and day player roles. Shooting will take place beginning November 12, 2012 in Los Angeles and Austin, Texas where additional casting for speaking and non-speaking roles will take place. Especially needed will be people who can portray late 1960s Los Angeles music scene types.
“Cinnamon Girl” centers on four girls as they come of age during the radical change in culture of the late 1960s and early 1970s in Los Angeles, particularly the Laurel Canyon area where rockers, politicos, drop-outs and wannabes have gathered to make a difference. The music themed drama will examine Cassie, Lola, Penny and Lou’s lives as they reach a turning point of the era’s political, artistic, social and sexual rebellions. Among the top musicians of the time are Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Joni Mitchell, David Crosby, and Jim Morrison.
The fantastic cast includes Canadian actress Allie MacDonald in the lead role of Cassie Carter, a character loosly based on Renée Zellweger’s move from small-town Texas to Hollywood stardom; the talented actress and singer Jade Bartlett plays Mary “Lou” Roth, the lead singer for a club band, something of a mother figure to the young hippies and rock and roll types crowding her Laurel Canyon home; Alexis Knapp plays Lola Jones, a head-turner wild child actress who hails from a line of Hollywood royalty, and is also a waitress at The Whiskey; and three-time Young Artist Award winner Brooke Anne Smith has been cast as Junie Jablonski, a high school girl living in Canoga Park, an adorable California free spirit, die-hard Beatles fan with a particular fondness for Paul McCartney.
American film director, screenwriter, producer, playwright and actor Gavin O’Connor will direct “Cinnamon Girl” from a teleplay written by Anthony Tambakis based on a story by Renée Zellweger and Tambakis. O’Conner directed the Walt Disney Pictures feature film “Miracle” starring Kurt Russell, wrote and directed the New Line Cinema film “Pride and Glory” starring Colin Farrell and Edward Norton, and wrote/produced/directed the Academy Award winning Lionsgate feature film “Warrior”. He recently directed the pilot episode of “The Americans,” which has been ordered to series by FX Network
Academy Award and Golden Globe Award-winning actress Renée Zellweger will executive produce with Anthony Tambakis and Gavin O’Connor. The catalyst for the project was Zellweger’s journey from small-town Texas to Hollywood stardom, combined with Tambakis’ lifelong fascination with both the Laurel Canyon music scene and the New Hollywood, auteur theory driven era that began in the late 1960s. Danny Bramson will serve as producer. Fox 21 won an intense bidding war for producing rights against Warner Horizon Television and Universal Cable Productions. Reports say that Fox 21 paid around $6 million, described as the highest cost ever for a basic cable pilot.

Story:

Inspired by Zellwegger, MacDonald’s Cassie is a beautiful, coltish, wholesome, feisty and intelligent Indiana girl who, terrified of ending up like her mother, “married by 20 and stuck in Indiana for the rest of her life,” heads for California, determined to be part of all that’s changing in the world. Knapp’s Lola is a force of nature, a wild child, a beautiful actress who hails from a line of Hollywood royalty, also a bartender. Smith’s June is a perky and adorable high school girl living in Canoga Park, a die-hard Beatles’ fan with a particular fondness for Paul McCartney. Bartlett’s Lou is the lead singer for a club band, something of a mother figure to the young hippies and rock ‘n roll types crowding her Laurel Canyon home who takes newly arrived Cassie under her wing. Piggott will play Billy, a heartthrob and future superstar who has immediate chemistry with Cassie.
