Rhode Island Avenue Productions and ABC Studios are in pre-production on a new a single-camera musical comedy fairytale television series, from the writer and composer team that brought you the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures animated Oscar-nominated feature film “Tangled”. The show’s casting director has begun auditioning actors for series regulars and possible recurring roles, including the title role of Galavant and his true love Madalena. Other roles include Kings and Queens, a Princess, henchman and a squire, among others. The actors are required to have Broadway singing style skills. The show’s extras will be hired closer to the beginning of production, which does not have an exact start date yet.
The series centers on a true hero named Galavant, a classic skilled dragon-slayer. Although he swore off love at 8 years old in favor of training and classes, he falls passionately in love with the incredibly beautiful Madalena. But when evil King Richard kidnaps Madalena for his bride, the materialistic Madalena chooses Richard’s wealth and power over Galavant’s love. Galavant falls apart and becomes an overweight alcoholic. One day a princess named Isabella asks Galavant to help rescue her imprisoned parents, the King and Queen of Valencia, from King Richard who is trying to obtain the priceless Jewel of Valencia. With the help of his squire Sid, Galavant decides to get back on his feet and take on the challenge. There is only one problem… Galavant doesn’t know that Isabella’s mission isn’t quite what it seems to be.
Two-time Annie Awards nominee Dan Fogelman is executive producing and writing “Galavant”. Fogelman is an actor, director, producer and screenwriter whose screenplays include the Disney animated movies “Bolt,” “Tangled” and “Cars”. He is also creator and executive producer of the hit ABC series “The Neighbors”. Fogelman is partners with producer Jess Rosenthal in a new production company called Rhode Island Avenue Productions. Galavant is the first project to come out of an overall deal signed with ABC this past summer. Eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken will compose the music, while his frequent collaborator and fellow Academy Award winner Glenn Slater is writing the lyrics.
“Galavant” is a result of a musical episode of “The Neighbors” from last season titled “Sing Like A Larry Bird”. Dan Fogelman collaborated with Alan Menkin and Glenn Slater on that episode, which earned the show a Primetime Emmy nomination in the category of outstanding music and lyrics. The fairytale genre of “Galavant” is consistent with a recent trend by ABC, as the network already has the drama “Once Upon a Time” in the lineup, and now had a new spinoff from that series titled “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” (https://www.tvshowauditions.info/2013/07/new-abc-series-once-upon-time-in.html).

Various directors work different episodes during the season. In television shows composed of individual episodes, the television director’s role differs from that of a film director in that he or she may work only on some television episodes as opposed to the director of an entire film production. In episodic television productions, the major creative control resides with a producer of the show. The television producer(s) with creative control is called the showrunner(s) (in this case, Dan Fogelman).
