Michael Bay’s production company Platinum Dunes is now in production on a new apocalyptic drama series for TNT called “The Last Ship”, about a Navy destroyer whose captain and crew become some of the few remaining survivors on the planet after a global catastrophe. The series is based on the 1988 novel of the same name by William Brinkley. Casting calls are underway for new recurring and guest starring roles, and extras are also being cast throughout the season. Shooting is taking place in San Diego and Los Angeles through March 3, 2014.
“The Last Ship” centers on the crew of a the naval U.S.S. Nathan James who, after a global catastrophe decimates the earth’s population, are forced to confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they are among the only survivors. The ship commanded by Captain Tom Chandler and XO Mike Slattery is sent to the Arctic to provide backup for Dr. Rachel Scott, who’s on a secret but apparently very important research mission. After a surprise attack by Russian Special Ops, the crew is shocked to learn that Rachel’s mission is to collect samples with which she can make a vaccine to combat a highly contagious virus that’s already become a pandemic and may have in fact been weaponized. After four months at sea, the crew goes through many ordeals to get home only to find that the American government has been decimated and that there is essentially no home to return to.
Starring in “The Last Ship” is Screen Actors Guild Awards winner Eric Dane as Captain Tom Chandler, and Adam Baldwin as XO Mike Slattery. Other cast members include Michaela McManus playing the role of Lt. Jackie Makena, Charles Parnell as CMC Jeter, Travis Van Winkle playing Danny Green, Christina Elmore in the role of Lt. Alisha Granderson, Sam Spruell as Quicy, and Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee Rhona Mitra in the role of Dr. Rachel Scott.
Saturn Award winners Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Bradley Fuller are executive producing for Platinum Dunes. Primetime Emmy Award winner Jack Bender is also executive producing along with Primetime Emmy Award nominee Hank Steinberg, and Steven Kane. TNT has given a 10-episode first season order that the network plans to launch in 2014.
